Turkey grew 1.1 percent in 2008 and the government expects a negative growth for 2009. Last week, Turkish State Minister for economy and Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said Turkish economy could see a contraction of over 3.6 percent. Babacan also predicted that current deficit would be well below $10 billion in 2009.

Ayse Botan Berker, head of Fitch Turkey, said that Turkey would grow below average of the group 2B in which Turkey is evaluated.

Despite all improvements in Turkey's budget balance, Turkish economy has the deepest budget deficit in its group, Berker said.

When gross external debts are compared with current external incomes, Turkey has the highest ratios from 1999 to 2008, she said, adding that Turkey is worse than other countries although its debts were down.
